Telangana state is the home of the Kawal Tiger Reserve and is situated beside the Godavari river, which forms the Deccan Peninsula’s central highlands. This reserve is situated within the Sahyadri Mountain ranges and is well known for its thick forest, rivers, and various water bodies. The dense forest makes it accustomed to the conservation of tigers and other animals and life forms in this region.
The total area of the Kawal Tiger Reserve is around 1015.35 sq. km
History
The Kawal wildlife sanctuary was established in the year 1965 and declared as the Protected Area in 1999 under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Govt of India has declared the Kawal wildlife sanctuary as a Tiger Reserve in 2012
Flora
The Kawal Reserves come under the Deccan Plateau zone VI, and Teak and Bamboo trees are found in abundance here. Other than these, there are around 673 species of plants, some of the important ones are Anogeissus latifolia, Mitragyna parviflora, Terminalia crenulata, Terminalia, arjuna, Boswellia serrata, Sterculia urens, Terminalia belerica, just to name a few. This forest is also known for the wide variety of Grass and Weeds species that grow in abundance.
Fauna
Due to the nature gifted reserver and the think forest, Kawal reserver is home to many varieties of animals like the Black Buck, Sambar, Jackal, Spotted Deer, Tiger, Jungle cat, leopards, etc.
There are also around 23 types of insects and 10 types of amphibians. In addition to this, there are 34 kinds of reptiles. It is home to a wide variety of animals, insects, and reptiles.
The number of tigers has reduced considerably, and the authorities have increased activities to protect the tigers of this reserve.
Some of these measures are the implementation of infrastructures for the protection by increased patrolling, the setting up of wireless networks, and the relocation of villages to create a conducive environment for the growth of the tiger. Special emphases are given to ensuring sufficient water availability for animals to sustain them even in hot climates.
How to reach
Kawal Tiger Reserve in Adilabad district is at a distance of 50 km from Mancherial and around 250 km from Hyderabad.
India is blessed with tremendous natural resources including various species of Animal, Vegetation, Insects, Birds, etc. Every attempt should be made to preserve our forest so that it continues to provide humanity with the benefits we have been enjoying for ages. Kawal Tiger Reserve is one such habitat and the Government is working hard to preserve it. We as citizens should contribute to this effort too.
